Just Gotta Get it Off My Chest…

I was talking to a couple people today about the Sarah Palin “scandal”. Namely, the fact that the running mate of John McCain has a pregnant teenage daughter.

I vehemently declared that it was completely pointless and counter-productive to discuss things like a person’s children and family during a political campaign, since it diverts attention from the actual issues that should be discussed during an election.

That is, until I did a little bit more research on Ms. Palin this evening. It turns out that Ms. Palin, a conservative Christian, opposes any type of government funded sexual education programs, with the exception of abstinence-only programs.

Given her background, and the fact that she has made these statements concerning sex-ed, I find it unlikely that she educated her daughter concerning pregnancy prevention methods. I have no way of knowing if the daughter may have learned about it in school, but given Palin’s staunch opposition to sex-ed in schools, I find it unlikely that she would have allowed her daughter to attend a class that taught about contraceptives.

The conservative, religious right, of which Ms. Palin is slated to be the ring-leader, walk around with their heads in the clouds, thinking “If we tell them that they shouldn’t have sex, they won’t”.

IT DOES NOT WORK.

The millions of tax dollars our government has poured into abstinence only education has not made the tiniest dent in the overwhelming number of teen pregnancies and STDs in this countries.

On the flip side, countries with a frank and honest comprehensive sexual education program (such as the Netherlands), have teen pregnancy and STD rates many times lower than we have here.

Wake the fuck up people!

If Sarah Palin continues to tote her “family values” bullshit after her own daughter became pregnant (and likely has an STD, unless they had not been with any other partners, EVER…), then I officially dub her as bat-shit crazy, and I do NOT respect her for “maintaining her standards” throughout this ordeal.

It’s not morals. It’s not values. It’s flat out, undisguised ignorance. Again, turning a blind eye to a problem that can be all but solves simply by sharing simply information.

Yes, I think it is VERY wise to tell your children that they should abstain from sexual activity until they are mature and prepared enough for said activity. If that means marriage, then so be it. However, don’t tell them to abstain, then leave them without any information at all on how to protect themselves.

The whole thing is just really, really fucking sad.

This Republican ticket has gone from mildly disturbing to absolutely fucking scary, with the addition of Ms. Crazy Pants into the mix.

Poor America.
